Saddha Yongjun

Arunachal Pradesh: Massive Hunger Among 65,875 Chakmas & Hajongs Because Of Their Exclusion From COVID-19 Economic Package & Sell Of Rice @ Rs 29/- Per Kg By The State Government During National Lockdown

NOT A CRIME TO BE BORN AS A CHAKMA: A classic case of the “Chinkies” discriminating the "Chinkies"

Thousands of Chakmas/Hajongs are facing starvation in Arunachal Pradesh because of their ethnic origin/descent. On 12.04.2020, Arunachal Pradesh govt announced Covid 19 economic package, among others, to provide rice @ Rs 5/per kg. On 14 April, another order was passed under which individuals of Diyun read as Chakmas/ Hajongs who reside at Diyun, Arunachal Pradesh have to buy @ Rs 29/per kg at open market scheme. The rate for the Chakmas/ Hajongs is higher than the rate of Rs. 22/Kg for rice set for FCI in the country! The ration cards of the Chakmas/ Hajongs were illegally seized by the State government in 1991.

Chakmas and Hajongs were settled by the Union of India during 1964, migrants have not been given citizenship in contempt of the two Supreme Court judgments and the descendants of the migrants are citizens by birth, thousands have been voting.

After fifty six years of State sponsored discrimination, thousands of the Chakmas/ Hajongs are daily wage labourers and locked down, without any support from the State, has pushed them to hunger and starvation.

One can bear acts of discrimination, humiliation and physical violence which are enduring by themselves, but hunger among children becomes unbearable for any parent and any conscientious human being.

It is a classic case of discrimination of the Chinkies by the Chinkies even though we (me included) take such offence to be called as “Chinky” in the rest of India. These sorts of discrimination actually at times make me wonder whether I should get hurt when someone humiliates me a "Chinky".

Pain is the same irrespective of who unleashes it as the hunger itself! That is what human rights is all about, a realisation of any conscientious human being.

These acts of discrimination do not stop me from being what I am and makes me more determined to address human rights violations irrespective of caste, creed, ethnic origin, nationality, religion, language and all other excuses for discrimination that a human mind can think of.

I shall remain undettered as ever. Chakmas will survive this pandemic too without the State, which has really never been there for them in India.

It is not a crime to be born as a Chakma. We shall survive as even if we have struggle for each thing.
The State can only inflict so much pain and discrimination. Not more.
